Jack Pine Trees Ltd are Chartered Arboriculturists through the Institute of Chartered Foresters and professional members of the Arboricultural Association.
We have over 30 years of experience in the arboricultural industry and have been providing tree management advice and arboricultural consultancy since 1998.
Clair and I share a love of trees and the environment that stretches way back into our childhoods and for me it developed into my area of study and eventually my livelihood.
After gaining my degree in Environmental Science, I spent a few years working on environmental education and work experience programmes, setting up the Keep Northampton Tidy initiative, among other things. I loved the work but realised that I needed to get some practical skills if I was going to be able to offer more.
In 1988, I moved to Bristol and started working for a friend’s tree and landscaping business. It was at this time that my love of the natural world developed into a passion for trees.
My time at All Seasons taught me how to be a part of a tree gang, how to work on trees, why different jobs required different specifications and how and why we pruned trees in the way we did. It was the time of Alex Shigo’s ‘Modern Arboriculture’ and my friends began my education in tree physiology and disease identification.
They gave me an invaluable skill set that enabled me to work for a landscape company in Japan, to be able to appreciate the amazing trees of the tropics and to tough it out with the tree men of the Pacific Northwest. When I came back from my travels, I slipped straight back into tree work and working with the environment.
Eventually, I took a job with Treework Services and quickly became the Contracts Manager, where I learned all about managing tree teams, how to price work, run contracts and deliver the services to meet our client’s needs. My boss was passionate about cutting edge arboriculture and involved us in tree risk management, tree databases and the ‘new’ study of veteran trees. He loved to educate and persuaded me to study towards my professional qualifications.
With my Technician’s Certificate, I entered the world of tree surveying. Street trees in Bristol. Highway trees throughout Nottinghamshire. Open space trees for Mendip District Council, where I was eventually taken on to manage the tree stock.
By this time, I was self-employed, and my practice grew to manage over 10,000 trees for various clients. I also started to provide Tree Officer cover for the Planning Departments of North Somerset Council and Mendip District Council. This was the beginning of my education about trying to retain trees on development sites.
As the business grew, Clair joined the team and brought her technical know-how and admin wizardry into the office, providing much needed support and organisation.
The business is now in its 25th year, and the practice had developed to include auditing work for National Grid, along with my tree management and development site clients. We also began to develop tree walks for a number of clients, which also developed into creating tree collection plans for customers who are passionate about growing unusual trees.
Providing consultancy on the value of trees and how they can help mitigate the climate and ecological crisis has brought my personal and professional interests full circle through some very exciting work with Weston-super-Mare Town Council’s Climate Change Working Party and the creation of the Weston Tree and Plant Group. It brings together the need to plant more trees and increase canopy cover, along with the creation of a community tree nursery, redesigning planting schemes to increase biodiversity and pollinator populations and finding ways to encourage people to consciously connect with trees for their health and wellbeing.
We remain passionate about trees and aim to provide a fully rounded and bespoke tree service to our customers, whether it is tree risk assessment, tree management, planting schemes, educational walks or community engagement. Our approach is to provide you with a holistic approach, to empower and guide your decision making, and assist you in making the best choices in the management of your trees.
